Project Description

9 classes • 330 contact hours • 2 delivery options

As essential oils become more commonplace, the demands placed on today’s aromatherapists are higher and stronger than ever before. While many aromatherapy certification programs focus almost exclusively on the DIY aspects of aromatherapy, today’s clients want to know more than how to create a body butter or an inhaler stick. Today’s clients want to know how EOs produce measurable health-related effects in the body. A solid and comprehensive scientific education is no longer a luxury but a requirement to achieve success in the field.

Aromatherapy certification from the Franklin Institute of Wellness ensures that you enter the field prepared to face the challenges today’s aromatherapists must overcome. In our 330 contact hour program (roughly 660-1,320 total study hours), you will learn not only the basics of traditional aromatherapy such as blending and diluted topical application, but also the advanced applications and techniques today’s clients demand. The program is available both fully online or in a hybrid delivery option.

Aromatherapists who graduate from our programs are trained in the safety and suitability of concentrated topical applications, including neat (undiluted) where acceptable, as well as the background, experience, and expertise required to work with clients in ways which include the ingestion of essential oils. This rigorous and comprehensive experience ensures  that you gain a competitive advantage in this rapidly growing field.

Our aromatherapy programs are based on the latest scientific research, and we not only utilize scientific study as a core focus of our program, but we also contribute to the growing body of knowledge directly by conducting research studies and clinical trials right here at the Institute. This unique benefit of study is made available by working with instructors who are not only highly accomplished aromatherapists but also research professionals with advanced education and expertise.

  • Global Focus – Learn from educators who have studied all across the globe
  • Fully Online & Blended Options – Complete the program fully online or through our blended option with on-site workshops
  • Academic Success – Go beyond the basics to fully master today’s uses of essential oils
  • Student Dedication – With a 92% graduation rate, FIW has a track record of ensuring that students succeed
  • Graduate Success – A whopping 94% of graduates now work in natural health using their certificate

The certificate consists of 9 total classes, ranging from 30-50 contact hours each (equivalent to 3-5 quarter credit hours each). With accelerated terms of only 11 weeks and 4 start dates each year, you can earn your Aromatherapy Certification from a legitimate college in as little as 9-18 months!

Program Legitimacy

In such a rapidly growing field, it is important to confirm the legitimacy of your essential oil training. As evidence of the higher standards you will find at the Franklin Institute of Wellness, we are proud to be fully authorized to grant college certificates and degrees by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. This commission oversees college education and ensures that diplomas and certificates issued by the FIW are recognized as legitimate college credentials nationwide.

This authorization is renewed annually and is based on standards concerning the quality of higher education offered by FIW, ethical business practices, student success rates, instructor qualifications, and fiscal responsibility. Franklin Institute of Wellness has been approved as a higher education institution since its foundation in 2013 and annual reviews have found that the school continues to meet those high standards each year.

The Franklin Institute of Wellness is also an approved school by the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy and is the only NAHA approved school with a PhD researcher directing the program. Our Director, Dr. Jessie Hawkins, is also the Tennessee Regional Director for NAHA and a frequent speaker at NAHA events.

Comprehensive Curriculum

The Certificate in Aromatherapy (CertAro) program covers not only applied aromatherapy, but also core health sciences, essential oil ingestion, and aromatherapy research. This comprehensive curriculum ensures that you are able to achieve success as an aromatherapist upon graduation from the program. The required classes for the CertAro are divided into three main phases. Full time students complete 1 phase (or the equivalent) each academic quarter. Part time students complete 1/2 of a phase each academic quarter (typically either 1 concentration (50 contact hour/200 study hour) class OR 2 core (30 contact hour / 120 study hour) classes per academic quarter).

For planning purposes, a contact hour reflects 50-60 minutes of instruction delivery and requires an additional 2-3 hours of study time. Instruction delivery may be online lectures, hands-on assignments, textbook reading, or reading research studies. Additional study time is determined by each student’s unique learning style and previous experience with the subject.

Aromatherapy Certificate Phase 1:

In this 30 contact hour class, you will study the origins of modern health by looking back over time at the ways culture, innovation, and science have influenced health practices. By exploring the evolution of health through the eyes of prominent leaders, you will have a comprehensive framework and context to explore your role in today’s natural health field.
This 30 contact hour class provides the scientific foundation for the identification and utilization of plant matter in modern health practices. It explores plant families and prominent chemicals from these plants with an emphasis on practical applications for modern formulations.
This 50 contact hour (roughly 200 study hour) class provides the equivalent of an entire aromatherapy certification program at many other schools. This includes an in-depth study of essential oils, including sourcing, production, applications, and formulations. Students in the blended program delivery option will also come on-site for a required 3-day classroom and lab experience while taking this class.

Aromatherapy Certificate Phase 2:

This 30 contact hour class provides an introduction to the connections throughout the body triggered by the stress response. You will learn the science behind how the mind-body connection affects wellness and how to adapt stress-relieving behaviors.
This 30 contact hour class covers the major body systems and organs within each system with an emphasis on how botanical products affect these systems and how they function in both health and disease.
In this 50 contact hour concentration class, you will gain real world experience, applying solutions from the scientific literature to real life scenarios. It builds upon the foundation established in ARO101 by furthering your mastery of essential oil based products, exploring new extraction methods (such as CO2 extracts and hydrosols), and empowers you to apply these findings to the real world through a variety of applications, including ingestion.

Aromatherapy Certificate Phase 3:

Research Methods is a 30 contact hour class which covers the research process, the role of scientific research in botanical science, and how scientists conduct scientific research. You will master the science of research interpretation and better understand how to use scientific research to inform essential oil applications.
This 30 contact hour class bridges the gap between practical education and professional success. You will learn how to legally and ethically operate as an aromatherapist with or without additional professional credentials.
This advanced 50 contact hour concentration class provides practical fieldwork, critical applications of the scientific content, and practical experience as a professional in aromatherapy. It includes multiple in-depth case studies, hands-on experience applying findings from scientific research, and creative formulation exercises. Students in the blended program delivery option will also come on-site for a required 3-day classroom and lab experience while taking this class.

Academic work at the Franklin Institute of Wellness is rigorous and comprehensive. Returning to college to earn a diploma is a challenge that requires commitment. However, our faculty members are here to support you every step of the way, ensuring that you have fully mastered the content in the classes. Upon graduation, you will have achieved expertise in the field of aromatherapy that rivals some of the greatest experts in the field.

Affordable Tuition

The Franklin Institute of Wellness provides some of the most affordable college programs in the nation. Billing is flexible and easy to budget. You are billed at the start of each academic quarter for the classes you will take during that quarter. Quarterly tuition is controlled by the number of credits you take each quarter.

To ensure that you remain unaffected by any tuition increases that may occur while you are a student at the Franklin Institute of Wellness, upon admission, you enter into a program agreement with the school. This program agreement confirms your graduation requirements and tuition totals. This agreement protects you from any tuition increases or program requirement changes that may take place while you are a student at FIW, ensuring that your budget and timeline are unaffected while you earn your diploma. The program agreement is valid as long as you remain a student in good standing at FIW. This is determined by adherence to attendance policies and our code of conduct.

Upon acceptance, there is a $135 registration fee, and upon program completion, there is a $65 graduation fee. Tuition is paid per class and is $255 per 30 contact hour class and $425 per 50 contact hour class.  Lab fees are required with Blended ARO101 and with Blended ARO301. Aromatherapy is Growing

As essential oils become more and more commonplace, the need for qualified and experienced professionals is rapidly growing. This booming industry requires essential oil experts who are capable of educating and empowering clients on the safe and effective applications of essential oils and experts who can formulate essential oil based products for a growing market.

Whether your goals are to integrate aromatherapy into your existing practice, to formulate organic household or body care products, or to consult with individuals about the safe and effective uses of essential oils, a recognized aromatherapy certification from a legitimate research-focused college is the first step.

Careers with an Aromatherapy Certification

FIW-trained professional aromatherapists operate practices around the world, offering personal consultations for clients. A private consulting practice enables you to work directly with clients to provide them the education and empowerment they need to make safe and healthy decisions for their families with the help of essential oils and essential oil-based products.

Graduates with an aromatherapy certification also work for the essential oil industry as a product consultant, providing valuable expertise in product safety and efficacy. Or you can go on to develop and market your own line of aromatherapy products or supplements. Some FIW graduates have even opened their own line of essential oils, providing high quality oils and effective blends.

If you already hold a license in a medical field, you can increase earning potential by adding an aromatherapy certification to your existing credentials, empowering your patients to use their favorite essential oil products more effectively and safely. As the essential oil industry continues to explode, this expertise sets you apart from others in the field.
