Bergamot Essential Oil for Anxiety: A Meta Analysis

2019-07-11T14:36:30-05:00November 10th, 2018|

Essential oil inhalation is used to treat anxiety in many populations. While multiple clinical trials on this approach exist in the scientific literature, findings often conflict. Effect sizes in these studies vary dramatically and some studies do not find that inhalation of bergamot essential oil for anxiety is effective. To address this issue, the Franklin School of Integrative Health Sciences' research department conducted a meta-analysis on bergamot and anxiety. The Study "Bergamot Essential Oil for Anxiety: A Meta-Analysis" Methodology A meta-analysis is used to provide more precision and details on the effects of a treatment. The Study "The Effects of Aromatherapy and Scent Memory on Anxiety Scores Among Children With an Autism Spectrum Disorder" Participants: Now Recruiting We are now recruiting participants for [...]

Essential Oils for Fatigue Caused by Hypothyroidism

2019-06-27T20:39:52-05:00January 14th, 2018|

This clinical trial, conducted in 2017, evaluated the effects of essential oils for fatigue among women who have a diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Fatigue is one of the most prevalent symptoms of hypothyroidism among women, reducing overall quality of life. Even with hypothyroid treatments which successfully replace thyroid hormones and reduce the risks of adverse outcomes from hypothyroidism, many women continue to report reduced quality of life with fatigue being a common complaint.  While essential oils have been found to increase stamina and boost energy levels among male athletes, aromatherapy has not been studied for its potential to reduce fatigue among women with [...]

Aromatherapy for Preprocedural Anxiety Among Pediatric Patients w/ ASD

2019-06-27T20:39:52-05:00January 14th, 2018|

While essential oils have been found in the scientific literature to reduce preprocedural anxiety in patients when administered prior to a scheduled medical procedure, no study has evaluated essential oils for autism. The potential for these effects on preprocedural anxiety among pediatric autistic patients is uncertain due to the way in which autistic children experience sensory stimuli. Because children with autism spectrum disorders tend to be hypersensitive to sensory experiences, essential oils which have been found in the scientific literature to reduce anxiety may not be suitable. To evaluate the potential for suitability and efficacy of essential oils on preprocedural anxiety among [...]

Are lavender and tea tree oils dangerous for young boys?

2019-07-03T13:36:33-05:00March 11th, 2017|

You may have heard the rumors: a clinical trial proves that lavender oil and tea tree oil have estrogenic-like effects in young boys, causing prepubertal gynecomastia! Background In the early 2000s, a pediatrician noticed a trend within his practice. Three boys, of different ages and from different families, all presented with the same extremely rare disorder: prepubertal gynecomastia. Noticing this cluster of cases, he began looking for similarities among these boys. Were they exposed to any of the myriad of hormone disruptors in the environment? No. Upon investigating further, he found that the only discernible trend among the patients was exposure to lavender oil [...]
